Ahmet Ertegun

The Andy Warhol Diaries

Ahmet Ertegun’s appearances in Andy Warhol’s diary are brief but concrete: he moves between an intellectual gathering and a music-industry evening, bringing Warhol into contact with different kinds of company. The entries establish him through these acts of presence and invitation rather than through a fuller account of his life or work.

Among the intellectual circle

At a gathering at Norman Mailer’s Brooklyn Heights home, Warhol described the room as an intellectual party with a distinctly 1960s cast. Ahmet attended with Mica Ertegun; the other guests included Arthur Schlesinger and Jean Kennedy Smith with her husband. The diary records Ahmet as part of this crowded social scene, without assigning him a speaking role or describing a particular exchange.

An invitation into the music scene

On another occasion, Ahmet and Mica called Warhol to invite him to dinner at Gallagher’s for the Traamps, a thirteen-member Black group on Atlantic Records that was due to play at Roseland. Warhol went to dinner and then to the performance. The sequence makes Ahmet’s role especially clear: he was not merely another name in a guest list, but the person helping bring Warhol into an evening organized around a live act.

At Roseland, Warhol noticed a singer wearing real gold fingernails. She gave him her number so she could be interviewed in Interview; the following day, she called and identified herself as Esther Phillips. The diary does not say that Ahmet arranged this later contact, but his invitation placed Warhol at the performance where the opportunity arose. Interview’s growing appetite for new faces gives the episode a wider context: the magazine had become a way for Warhol to meet and feature people beyond the circle once drawn to his films.

A recurring social function

Together, the entries show Ahmet in two settings—the gathering of intellectuals and the dinner-and-performance route into popular music. They do not develop into a portrait of his private life or establish the terms of a close relationship with Warhol. Instead, they record a practical social connection: Ahmet appears in the company Warhol moved through, and his invitation leads Warhol to a musical event that yields a possible Interview story.
